History of Haidian Science Park
Haidian Science Park’s development can be divided into three stages: the initial phase; the development phase; and the growth phase.
The Initial Phase (1980 – 1988)
In the early 80’s, with the driven forces of the world’s new technology revolution and our country’s reform and opening-up policy, a group of scientific researchers courageously explored the effective ways to transform achievements in science and technology into commercial success.

- These accomplishments also gave life to industry development models based on theories of “market as guidance; technology as support; and integration of technology, industry and trade”.
The development phase (1988 – 1999)
In 1988, authorized by the State Council, our country’s first state-level high and new technology industrial park – Beijing new technology industry development experimentation area is officially established, marking a new historical era for the spontaneous entrepreneurial activities of Zhongguancun.
In 1988, China’s first state-level high technology industrial park – Beijing New Technology Industrial Development Experimental Zone – was officially established.
- This stage was marked by the construction of the IT base in Shangdi in 1992.
- Stone Group Hi-Tech Co. Ltd, Lenovo Group and Beida Founder Group Corp. were successively listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, bringing capital and enterprise operation to a higher level.
- In 1993, Lenovo came up with the first Lenovo brand computer. For the first time in 1998, Lenovo’s sales volume was top in the Asia Pacific region.

The growth phase (1999 till now)
In this period of time, Haidian Science Park has become the most concentrated area of networking companies, in step with the world’s economic and technological development.
- After going through the trade dependent development phase, the enterprises in the Haidian Science Park area are now starting a new phase of industrial development.
- Successful research and development of a batch of CPU chips with proprietary intellectual property rights such as the Arca series, Godson series, and the Starlight series, etc, for creating a good condition in seizing the higher end of the industrial chain.
- A large number of talents with multicultural background and who have studied abroad are building their businesses in Zhongguancun, thus enriching the human resources of Haidian Science Park.
